Protect Your Home, Save Thousands, and Gain Peace of Mind

Gurgling drains? Soggy patches in the yard? Slow-flowing sinks? These are all warning signs that can (and often do) make any homeowner uneasy. Septic problems aren’t just a messy inconvenience; if left unchecked, they can turn into expensive emergencies. That’s why regularly-scheduled septic system inspections are essential for maintaining a safe, efficient home.

At Restorex Septic Solutions, we specialize in home septic inspections for families across Central Indiana. With decades of construction and engineering expertise, our certified team gives you clear, straightforward answers and cost-effective solutions without the scare tactics.

Why Septic Inspections Matter

Think of your septic system as the hidden engine of your home’s plumbing. When it’s working, you rarely think about it. When it fails, the consequences can quickly become stressful and costly.

  • Routine septic system inspections help prevent full-scale failures.
  • A pump-out every 3-5 years costs about $375. Compare that to $20,000+ for a full system replacement.
  • Inspections are often required during real estate transactions, giving both buyers and sellers peace of mind.
  • Local health regulations in Indiana require systems to remain safe and compliant.

“If the septic tank is pumped once a year, you get a look inside the tank once a year.

That’s really not a bad plan.”

 – Corbin Clow

Septic System Inspection

What’s Included in Our Septic System Inspection

When you schedule an inspection with Restorex Septic Solutions, you’ll receive a complete, step-by-step evaluation of your system. Our certified inspectors follow a comprehensive septic system checklist that includes:

  • Locating your septic system and ensuring clear access.
  • Measuring sludge and scum layers with specialized tools.
  • Checking the tank’s condition, including inlet and outlet baffles.
  • Inspecting the distribution box (D-box), which is the “brain” of your system.
  • Evaluating the drain field for pooling water, odors, or lush vegetation.
  • Testing flow from the home to the tank.
  • Providing a detailed inspection report with recommendations.

At Restorex Septic Solutions, we take pride in providing clear, easy-to-understand explanations, so you know exactly what’s happening with your system.

Signs You Need a Septic System Inspection Now

Don’t wait until sewage is backing up into your home. Call for a septic inspection if you notice:

  • Gurgling drains or toilets.
  • Slow-flowing sinks, especially basement sinks.
  • Sewage odors indoors or in the yard.
  • Soggy or unusually green grass above your drain field.
  • Water pooling near the tank or drain field.

Repair vs. Replacement: Understanding Your Options

Not every issue means you’ll need a whole new septic system. At Restorex Septic Solutions, we use a stair-step approach to find the most cost-effective solution:

  1. Routine Pumping. Removes the buildup of sludge and scum.
  2. Minor Repairs. Replacing baffles or fixing a distribution box.
  3. Rejuvenation Service. Using techniques like soil fracturing to restore absorption in clogged drain fields.
  4. Replacement. Only recommended if the system is beyond repair.

“Failed or missing baffles are the most common defect I find.

They prevent solids and grease from being filtered.”

 – Corbin Clow

Aerobic vs. Conventional Septic Systems

While most Indiana homes use conventional septic systems, an increasing number of properties are relying on aerobic treatment systems, like a Presby system. These systems use oxygen to break down waste and produce cleaner effluent; however, they require more frequent inspection and maintenance.

Our certified team has the experience to handle both aerobic septic system inspections and conventional system evaluations, giving you complete confidence regardless of the type of system you own.

Septic System Inspection FAQs

Q: How often should a septic system be inspected?
A: At least every time the septic tank is pumped. Annual pumping, then, gives an annual look inside the tank.

Q: What does a step-by-step tank check look like once the lid is open?
A: First checking water level vs. outlet elevation, then inspecting inlet/outlet baffles (and outlet filter), and look for staining above the outlet (which indicates recurring high water). Then consider likely causes (downstream restriction, field saturation, rain intrusion, etc.).

Q: How much flow (in gallons) do you run during a stress test on a three-bedroom house?
A: We run water for 30-45 minutes, which is usually enough to confirm water enters and leaves the tank without the level rising above the outlet.

Q: What causes a septic system to fail inspection?
A: Surfacing effluent, non-watertight tank, or backups/not flowing are pretty much the standard failure criteria.

Q: What’s the most common tank defect you find, and how do you grade its severity?
A: Failed/missing baffles (and/or missing outlet filter). Without them, fats, oils, and grease (FOG)/solids reach the drain field and shorten its life. This is a high priority to correct.

Q: Do you ever do a septic system inspection as part of a home inspection for people looking to buy or sell a home?
A: Yes, when requested. Restorex Septic Solutions recommends a full inspection with pumping for real-estate deals because partial (no-pump) inspections can miss critical findings.

Q: How much should one expect to pay for a septic tank inspection?
A: Around $600, which includes the $375 tank pump-out for proper visibility.
